I was on the faculty of Louisiana State University in the early 1990’s. LSU is located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Just north of Baton Rouge is the small town of St. Francisville. You can actually get to St. Francisville by following the Mississippi River north from Baton Rouge, along part of what is known as the River Road area of Louisiana.

St. Francisville is known for having a number of antebellum plantations which are still standing and often in remarkable good condition. One of these plantations is Greenwood Plantation, which was originally built in 1830. At one time, the plantation encompassed 12,000 acres, mostly farming sugarcane.

This photo was taken during the late afternoon when I visited St. Francisville. The pond in the foreground is actually not original to the property and was created during the digging of the clay for the construction of the bricks used in the house.
