The morning sun shone through the textured glass of the 105 year old window in the dining room.
Its dark cherry wood frame streaked with tan rivers of water stain collected over the century from condensation and weathering. Refracted rainbow pieces of light scattered on the oak floorboards beneath it, powered by the luminescence of life that has greeted it each new day since it was set in its permanent home.
Glimmers of broken fragments sparked back in the sunshine to reveal fading hints of blue, red and green on the textured ceiling and grey-painted walls. Once set high upon a cabinet, singular, graceful, oval, handmade, the vase now spread about in luminous, shattered glory. So funny a thing to have been so original, and beautiful, to be caught in such an unprecedented event as the swish of a tail from a four-pawed feline.
To have hosted such elegance in its enclosure and present its onlookers with back-lit displays of colorful, aromatic nature for all of eternity would have been a fine and honorable duty. Now its whole made parts by an instance of carelessness, or neglect, revealing its secret power to harness more spirit than its maker could ever have imagined.
Such a fragile object, as a whole, to rely on the sun to reveal its majesty as it was intended. So easily changed by a moment in time it never expected, only to discover its own ability to mirror the sol and broadcast its effulgence beyond the star's reach. Arranged on the walls now an observatory of luminescence and spectrum, so breathtaking alone the steam from a hot cup of breakfast tea seemed to stop mid-air, as if to spy the compounded heart of life itself before disappearing in its own ether.
Heat and glow, angles and reflections, filtered several times over through shadows of glass and dust. It is fortunate moments like these, when the complexities of segments and wholes can be briefly glimpsed to reveal the overwhelming geometry of the essence of a thing. Once amalgamated units speak to the infinite depths, and endless horizons in melodic keys of concerted harmony.
When the sun shifts and the rainbows fade, after the shards are collected from the remnants of spilled flower petals, as the earth rotates on, the window will remain. Patiently it will hold for the next sunrise, for its next companion, to show us insight of the connected world that awaits us.
